WE DESIGNED AN INNOVATIVE “FLOATING” OFFSHORE WIND FARM IN THE HEART OF THE MEDITERRANEAN
It will be an offshore wind farm with high-powered turbines with a strong environmental connotation: thanks to the innovative floating technology, a “game changer” for the energy sector worldwide, the structures will not be sunk into the seabed, but anchored and floating.
THE FIRST FLOATING OFFSHORE WIND FARM IN THE MEDITERRANEAN
Located in the Sicilian Channel, it will consist of 190 floating turbines for an installed capacity of about 2.8 GW and an estimated annual output of almost 9 TWh. It represents the first plant of its kind in the Mediterranean Sea.
Once up and running, it will significantly contribute to Sicily’s achievement of energy independence ensuring annual production equivalent to the domestic electricity needs of around 3 million households.

HOW A “FLOATING” OFFSHORE WIND FARM WORKS:
- It consists of a system of turbines installed tens of kilometres from the coast;
- The wind towers are not embedded, but anchored to the seabed;
- In the open sea, it is possible to make the most of wind force, because it is more intense and therefore more productive;
- The kinetic energy of the wind drives the large wind turbines. Wind towers can be arranged in flock, delta or linear row formations;
- The force of the blades activates a generator, thus enabling the production of electricity;
- Through submarine cables, the energy thus produced is transmitted to power stations.
“For Italy and Sicily, it will be an investment that will have a significant impact on the island’s economy, also in terms of employment”
