This photo was captures aboard our <strong data-start=\"1324\" data-end=\"1334\">FLiDAR <\/strong>\u2014an autonomous, floating measurement platform functioning as a true open-sea laboratory. From this unique vantage point, <strong data-start=\"1449\" data-end=\"1460\">Renexia<\/strong> studies the marine environment to bring <strong data-start=\"1507\" data-end=\"1519\">Med Wind<\/strong> to life, the largest floating offshore wind farm project in the heart of the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"2098\">FLiDAR: what it does and why it is so important for Med Wind<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"2098\">The <strong data-start=\"1679\" data-end=\"1689\">FLiDAR <\/strong>gathers precise measurements of the wind resource, helping quantify how much \u201cwind energy\u201d is available in that area. Key technical features include:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"2597\" data-end=\"3106\">\n<li data-start=\"2597\" data-end=\"2635\">\n<p data-start=\"2599\" data-end=\"2635\">Total mass: approx. 8.2 tons<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2636\" data-end=\"2794\">\n<p data-start=\"2638\" data-end=\"2794\">Operational capability: stable performance and continuous measurement in deep waters and severe sea states<br data-start=\"2746\" data-end=\"2749\">Work in Trapani:<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2795\" data-end=\"2836\">\n<p data-start=\"2797\" data-end=\"2836\">final platform assembly<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2837\" data-end=\"2875\">\n<p data-start=\"2839\" data-end=\"2875\">functional testing of all sensors<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2876\" data-end=\"2919\">\n<p data-start=\"2878\" data-end=\"2919\">preparation of the mooring system<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"2920\" data-end=\"3106\">\n<p data-start=\"2922\" data-end=\"3106\">launch and offshore positioning<br data-start=\"2952\" data-end=\"2955\">Anchor release point: precisely located in the center of the <strong data-start=\"3058\" data-end=\"3070\">Med Wind<\/strong> project area, at a depth of approx. 575 meters<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 data-start=\"3108\" data-end=\"4045\">Main engineering and environmental challenges faced<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"3108\" data-end=\"4045\">The first challenge was logistical: transporting the hull and all the technological and scientific components from Canada (Victoria, Vancouver area) to Trapani. <br data-start=\"3316\" data-end=\"3319\">From an engineering point of view, the main complexity was related to the depth of the site and the environmental conditions of the Strait of Sicily. The mooring system was designed and verified through dynamic simulations, considering significant waves of up to approximately 8.5 m, average surface currents of 1.8 m\/s, and extreme event scenarios with a return period of 100 years.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3108\" data-end=\"4045\">The <strong data-start=\"3690\" data-end=\"3700\">FLiDAR <\/strong>was also tested immediately after installation by Cyclone Harry, which affected Sicily during the fourth week of January, overcoming the event without any operational criticalities. From an environmental point of view, a significant challenge was to ensure the safety and reliability of the system while minimizing its footprint on the seabed, which is mainly characterized by clayey sediments and fine silt.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4047\" data-end=\"4595\">Value of data collected for plant design<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4047\" data-end=\"4595\">The <strong data-start=\"4133\" data-end=\"4143\">FLiDAR\u2019<\/strong>s measurements are a foundational input for the engineering and design of the <strong data-start=\"4227\" data-end=\"4239\">Med Wind<\/strong> offshore wind farm. Anemometric measurements will significantly reduce uncertainties in wind resources, improving energy production estimates and supporting optimal turbine layout design. Additionally, marine weather data will provide a real reference for the sizing of structures and anchoring systems and for the planning of future installation and maintenance activities.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"4597\" data-end=\"4864\">FLiDAR technology partner\/supplier and expected data collection timeline<\/h2>\n<p data-start=\"4597\" data-end=\"4864\">The technology supplier for the FLiDAR system is <strong data-start=\"4712\" data-end=\"4733\">AXYS Technologies<\/strong>: <a class=\"decorated-link\" href=\"https:\/\/axys.com\/\" target=\"_new\" rel=\"noopener\" data-start=\"4735\" data-end=\"4764\">axys.com<\/a>.
